Tim Smiley (Fellow) has died at the age of 95
Â鶹ӰÊÓ´«Ã½'s longest serving Fellow, Professor Tim Smiley, has died at the age of 95.
Tim Smiley was an alumnus of Â鶹ӰÊÓ´«Ã½ who matriculated in 1949 and stayed on to do a PhD before joining the Fellowship as a Research Fellow 71 years ago. He served as Senior Tutor 1966–69, and as Acting Master in 1984 and again 1999–2000. A Fellow of the British Academy, Tim’s University career began at Cambridge in 1957 when he became an Assistant Lecturer in Philosophy. By 1980, he had risen to become the Knightbridge Professor of Philosophy, a post he held until his retirement in 1998.
Tim Smiley was the last surviving Fellow to have participated in the vote to elect Eric Ashby as Master in 1958, a moment he later described as "the defining episode in the history of the College in the 20th century".
He will be greatly missed, and the College extends its sincere condolences to his family and friends.
